The setup looks a bit like a gimmick; two stories in one, the diaries of a woman who's committed suicice on the bottom half of each page and the roadmovie her husband sets out on to try to deal with it on the top half. But damn, it works, the two texts (dis-)harmonizing to form both an intimate portrait of both internal and external causes and effects of depression, and a tragicomic take on the layers of history and opportunism that form modern-day Eastern Europe (try as it may to reposition itself as Central). The mythic bits become a creation myth in reverse, the personal ones very much so. I really want to read more of Mora.
