Worn out after decades of packing steel and raising hell, Viv the orc barbarian cashes out of the warrior’s life with one final score. A forgotten legend, a fabled artifact, and an unreasonable amount of hope lead her to the streets of Thune, where she plans to open the first coffee shop the city has ever seen.

However, her dreams of a fresh start pulling shots instead of swinging swords are hardly a sure bet. Old frenemies and Thune’s shady underbelly may just upset her plans. To finally build something that will last, Viv will need some new partners and a different kind of resolve.

A hot cup of fantasy slice-of-life with a dollop of romantic froth.

It's not an electric guitar, it's a thaumic lute

Really enjoyable cozy fantasy, maybe a little predictable but that can be part of the fun. As with the thaumic lute. If the author is using a little steampunk to explain how a pre-industrial, magic-using society has espresso machines, why not electric guitars too?

Also kudos to the author for reading his own audio book and doing a good job of it. I noticed he also owns the production rights to it. Good for him.

Cozy, but...

This book is like a nice warm cup of coffee.

But do you really want to read a book like a cup of coffee?

Its cozy, but there is virtually no plot or drama. (Almost) all of the characters are really nice, so there isn't even really any struggle to create anything. There's a sense of inevitability; Viv's cafe just sort of falls into place in line with what a modern cafe in our world looks like. That's actually baffling, as anyone who knows even a little of the history of coffee knows. The fantasy setting is also very shallow. Make all the characters human and change the color of the fire, and this could easily be written in our world.

The premise reminds me of some of the Discworld novels where roundworld things spontaneously develop, but in that case its a satirical commentary on our world …

Cosy, sweet

This is an easy read that I recommend. The two lost stars are because it's probably not going to change your life, it's just a light thing.

None

Every genre gets a cosy version, so why not D&D-style fantasy too? Somewhere out there, someone must be writing cosy splatterpunk.

I really enjoyed this novel more than the three stars indicate. It's a nice idea. It's a nice mix of characters. It's nicely told. Baldree neither has nor tries for the wit of Pratchett, or the politicking of Martin, or the hard questions of LeGuin, or... (can you tell I'm not a deep-cut fantasy reader?) It's all almost frustratingly nice. It's sweet and fluffy like a good cinnamon roll. It goes down perfectly with a cup of good coffee. That makes it a very good holiday read, even if I'd probably get sick of it if I decided to read a dozen more like it.

Low Stakes Sword & Sorcery? Yes, Please

The tagline is "A Novel of High Fantasy and Low Stakes" and then sneakily spends the entire novel showing that when you focus on individuals (including yourself) the little things really do matter.

This was just a fun read. I loved all the main characters, the bits of backstory, the interactions, the bending of coffeehouse stereotypes, and the bits of mystery here and there that never get resolved.

I instantly pre-ordered the next book, and hope this setting spawns many more books. I think this would many an excellent multi-author world, each telling low stakes stories, and would love to see that happen.

Vorerst mein letztes "Cozy adventure"

A Cozy Cup of Warmth

This is a fantastic January read for when the weather's bad and you're curled up inside. The plot is very slice of life focused, and it's as warm and cozy as the drinks described in the novel itself. Highly reccommend for anyone who feels they need to escape from real life for a couple of hours.
