Adrian Tchaikovsky: Children of Memory (2022, Tor)

My new theory is that there are two kinds of people: those who think that Children of Time is a better book than Children of Memory, and those that think the opposite.

I love Children of Memory. It was the best book I read in 2023. I think I understand why those that didn't like it didn't. Its confusing, there are multiple different story lines and viewpoints that sometimes seem to contradict each other, even halvway through the book you are not sure what is going on. I can see why a certain kind of orderly mind that was drawn to Children of Time doesn't like this sequel. I enjoy being taken on a ride by the author where I don't know the destination. And the ending certainly delivered.

Tchaikovsky always (well, at least in his science fiction books) has compelling world building and interesting ideas to explore. Children of Memory is the first book where he actually makes me care about his characters as well. It is a powerful combo.

I recommend this highly, but read the two previous books first.
