Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, heir to a noble family tasked with ruling an inhospitable world where the only thing of value is the "spice" melange, a drug capable of extending life and enhancing consciousness. Coveted across the known universe, melange is a prize worth killing for...
When House Atreides is betrayed, the destruction of Paul's family will set the boy on a journey toward a destiny greater than he could ever have imagined. And as he evolves into the mysterious man known as Muad'Dib, he will bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream.
A stunning blend of adventure and mysticism, environmentalism and politics, Dune won the first Nebula Award, shared the Hugo Award, and formed the basis of what is undoubtedly the grandest epic in science fiction.

2018 read: 5 stars because it was so interesting, but was a 1-star slog to get through.
2025 re-read: 5 stars on all fronts; guessing I was just not in the mood for this pacing the last time around. Loved so much about this book. Would re-read again now and excited to continue to the next books.
Rileggendo Dune trent’anni dopo.
Read the book after seeing the movies. While the world building in the book was well done things just seemed to happen in the book without much tension.

Sure, you can see the influence on dozens and dozens of sci-fi epics to come after it, and the worldbuilding is fantastic. At the same time, though, Herbert never found a simple plot he couldn't make complicated and a complicated one he couldn't skip by in a "three months later"..., his prose is overloaded with both thesauri and dictionaries, and Paul Atreides is an enigmatic asshole guided more by prophecy than any actual personality.
Looking forward to rewatching the Lynch version and watching the Villeneuve version, but I'm glad I didn't buy the big box set of books.
Lawrence Of Arabia IN SPICE SPACE!
