Att författaren vill efterlikna den medeltida romansen/riddarromanen är tydligt, men det gäller inte bara innehållet utan även skrivsättet, stilarten i genren av meningar och fraser mer konkret. Just det kan enligt min mening bli ganska drygt: Karaktärerna pratar styltigt och upprepar sig ofta.

Boken beskrivs inte sällan som "mästerlig", vilket jag själv tycker är en väldig överdrift. Den är ganska fascinerande och författaren får ha ett plus i kanten för att ha fördjupat sig i den tids berättelser han vill anknyta till. Som fantasy betraktat är det en tämligen fattig historia och når verkligen inte upp till den genrens verkshöjd i övrigt.

Temat är i mångt och mycket minne, minnets betydelse, minnet av krig, faktiskt krig och kärleken mellan två människor.

I wish I knew who to blame for this; is the stilted prose, the weird anachronisms, the consistently weird dialogue Ishiguro's or the translator's doing? I'm gonna guess both. I should be the perfect target audience for this; a mashup of the oldest English myths - Beowulf, Arthur, Bede, etc etc - but placing them in a new context, tackle the fog of history head-on. But I just cannot get into it. Reading this is a complete slog, headbutting the prose to get anwhere at all, and in the end I don't think it was worth it.
