This was probably the sort of read I needed after a bit of a mini-slump in reading time - a quick read that just flows by. (Also, I can't not like a novel that implies that Norwegians are inherently untrustworthy.)
That's both good and bad. The Changeling has a lot of stuff I should love; there's a ton of heavy themes submerged in the narrative, transplanting old fairytales in modern-day NYC while tackling questions of heritage, race, gender, etc etc. There's even an outright Pynchon nod at one point. It's never not interesting. At the same time, there's also something about the way it just zooms by all those things without ever stopping to go "Wait, are you serious?" that annoys me; the characters seem to change with the plot, jumping back and forth between smart and gullible, insightful and naive, asshole and reasonable... I feel like I'm just being dragged from plot point to plot point in a story that doesn't quite get its many threads to weave properly.
But yeah, I like the myth, I like the take it has on it, it just feels like it needed one more pass. Or one less.
