The least impressive Moshfegh I've read so far. A dark fairytale where people do horrible things to each other seemingly out just because it never occurs to them not to; Moshfegh relishes the dark bits, but a little too often fails to tie them into any character work that actually makes them more than just torturers and torturees. Sure, after the last few years in the US, I can get why you'd want to write a story about an infantile ruler ruining people's lives just because he can't understand why he wouldn't, and Moshfegh certainly has imagination to spare. But 320 pages should go somewhere.
