Hwaet!
Lo!
Ja,
So,
Bro!

A few thoughts on reading four different translations of Beowulf.

Gaeð a wyrd swa hio scel.
Fate goeth ever as she must.
Alltid går ödet som det skall.
Fate goes ever as fate must.
Bro, fate can fuck you up.

I'm honestly surprised at how good the story itself is. I expected a 1000-plus-year-old poem about a warrior to be a lot more simplistic; and yet, while I'm sure a modern reader will add extra depths of it (and miss some depth the author thought they made clear), there's so much here. There's the hero myth, with Campbell's hero's journey seemingly already in place all those years ago; Beowulf starts out as a typical impossibly valiant and righteous hero and ends up an old man out of his depth. So many other characters around him do the same; Hrothgar too old to …

Sorokin continues both paying homage to and sending up classic Russian literature and society. The tracks keep getting snowed over, but eventually you find them and, risking your life, keep going to... where, exactly?

I really want to put this in the hands of everyone who ever told me "You're a librarian? Man, it must be nice to have nothing to do but read books all day."

This is one I didn't read back when, and that's my loss. Sure you could argue that some of the early-90s feminist deconstruction of the hero myth is less than subtle, but it's driven by enough vim and some of the strongest prose I've yet to read from Le Guin. I love love love that Tenar gets to come back, gets to be valid even after 20+ years as just another muggle...

It's tempting to write this off with a meme. Sounds Like A You Problem: The Novel. Sex Is Evil And I Am Horny: The Novel. But as much as I find myself disagreeing with Tolstoy half the time, he keeps digging deeper, and damn.

I really wanted to love this. Maybe it's just that I'm in a major reading slump. But I never quite get sucked into the 1950s gothicness of it - where Signal to Noise felt lived, this often felt a little too consciously period-piece-y, and so caught up in its protagonist's own world that the other characters feel like they're constantly waiting just off-stage to interact with her. Still much to like and I hope to read more of her in the future.
